The Parthenon, Athens, Greece

Dominique Gingras, School student

I have only just arrived here and already I think that it is amazing. The marble building, with its many pillars and statues erupting from the ground, is located on a cliff in Athens Greece, in an area known as the Acropolis.

The building itself is called the Parthenon and it was built over 2,500 years ago in 538 BC. The sculpted decoration was not completed for another few years.  However, this is not the original building. The Greeks built one in the same location but it was destroyed by the Persians in 480 BC.

The Parthenon stands tall above the city of Athens, like a ruler of the world. The great building lives on a stone platform, raised from the earth, surrounded by a sea of marble, peaceful in the bright warmth of the blue sky but also with the rush of people in the city below. I feel excited but calm at the same time, happy but also peaceful.

It is an amazing sight, one I would like to see over and over again but this is the first and maybe the last time I will see the Parthenon.  When you experience this wonderful place all of the sad and bad things in today’s world are forgotten, so that you are left in a world of peace, happiness and joy.
